Henry W. Shryock papers, 1913-1935.

The collection consists of the records from Henry W. Shryock's term as university president from 1913 to 1935. Within the collection is a great deal of general correspondence with applicants, colleagues and community members regarding the running of the university. Some highlights include correspondence regarding the potential law suit brought by Paula Engleman and her husband after she fell from the bleachers during a sporting event, and some letters and petitions complaining of the requirement of the university to have students attend chapel. The collection also includes both handwritten and typed drafts of Shryock's unpublished autobiography A Long Road as well as correspondence regarding this document, including rejection slips and letters Shryock wrote to friends during the time he was writing. He also published and wrote poetry, and the collection includes both published and unpublished poems by Shryock. The collection also includes complete addresses given by Shryock including The Educational Value of Intellectual Wonderment, Contribution of the Teacher of Literature to American Life and The Obligation of the Individual to One's Society. Last in the collection are letters of condolence, memorial service programs and a text that seems to be a eulogy regarding the death of Shryock.

Henry William Shryock left the principalship of Olney High School to join the University's English faculty in 1894. He worked his way up the career ladder to become chair of his department and later registrar and vice president.
